Every gorilla trek starts with a 7:00 AM briefing at Kinigi. Staying nearby means a lie-in rather than a 4:30 AM start, and a warm room to come back to. There are two bases: Kinigi, right at the park edge, and Musanze, the regional town about 20–25 minutes away.
Kinigi or Musanze?
Kinigi
Closest to the park HQ, with volcano views and village surroundings. Home to most of the upscale lodges and a few community guesthouses. Quiet at night, fewer restaurants.
Musanze
A busy, pleasant town with markets, cafés, banks and many budget and mid-range hotels. A short drive from Kinigi. Good if you want independence and lower prices.
Luxury lodges
One&Only Gorilla's Nest
Set in a eucalyptus forest close to the Kinigi briefing point, with spacious suites and villas, fireplaces, a spa and polished service. The base for our luxury gorilla safari.
Bisate Lodge
Wilderness's lodge sits in the eroded cone of an ancient volcano, with striking villas inspired by traditional Rwandan royal architecture and a strong reforestation project around it. Views straight onto Bisoke and Karisimbi.

Expect to pay from roughly US$1,500 to well over US$4,000 per person per night at this level, usually including meals, drinks and some activities.

How to choose
- Distance: anything within 30 minutes of Kinigi works for a 7:00 AM briefing.
- Fireplace or heating: nights are cold; you'll appreciate it after a wet trek.
- Boot cleaning and drying: many lodges clean and dry your boots overnight. Very useful if you're trekking twice.
- Views: lodges facing the volcanoes are worth it on a clear morning.
- Community impact: community-owned and conservation-linked lodges send more of your money to the people around the park.
