Combining Gorilla Trekking with a Safari

Gorillas in the mountains, lions on the plains, then the Indian Ocean. Here is how to put East Africa's greatest experiences into one trip.

Gorilla trekking and a classic savannah safari are completely different experiences — one intimate and intense, the other wide open and full of animals — and they complement each other perfectly. The easiest way to combine them is to start with gorilla trekking in Rwanda and add a safari, either in Rwanda itself or a short flight away.

Gorilla trekking vs a safari: what's the difference?

Option 1: Stay in Rwanda (Akagera)

The simplest combination. Akagera National Park, in Rwanda's east, has the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino — plus giraffes, zebras and hippos, just 2.5 hours from Kigali. No extra flights or visas.

Option 2: Gorillas + Masai Mara (Kenya)

Kigali and Nairobi are linked by short direct flights, and the Masai Mara is a short light-aircraft hop from Nairobi. Time it for July to October to see the great migration river crossings.

Sample 7 days

Kigali → gorillas (2–3 days) → fly Nairobi → Masai Mara (3–4 days)

Trek gorillas first while you're fresh, then relax into game drives. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers both Rwanda and Kenya.

Option 3: Gorillas + Serengeti (Tanzania)

Fly from Kigali towards Kilimanjaro or Arusha, then on to the Serengeti by light aircraft. Tanzania requires its own visa. The Serengeti's migration herds are in the south around calving season (roughly January–March) and in the north from about July to October.

Option 4: Gorillas + Zanzibar beach

The classic "bush and beach". After gorillas (and perhaps Akagera), fly to Zanzibar via Dar es Salaam or Nairobi for white sand, spice tours and Stone Town. A great honeymoon ending.

Planning tips

  • Book the gorilla permit first — it's the hardest piece to secure.
  • Do the gorillas first, when you're freshest for hiking.
  • Mind luggage limits on light aircraft to the Mara or Serengeti (usually soft bags around 15 kg).
  • Check visas: East Africa Tourist Visa for Rwanda/Kenya/Uganda; Tanzania separate.

Gorillas + safari questions

Can I combine gorilla trekking with the Masai Mara?

Yes. Kigali and Nairobi are connected by short direct flights, and the Masai Mara is a short light-aircraft flight from Nairobi. A common plan is 2–3 days for gorillas in Rwanda plus 3–4 days in the Mara.

Can I combine gorilla trekking with Zanzibar?

Yes. Fly from Kigali to Zanzibar via Dar es Salaam or Nairobi and finish your trip with a few days on the beach — a classic "bush and beach" combination.

Do I need a gorilla safari and a savannah safari, or is Rwanda enough?

Rwanda alone gives you both: Akagera National Park has the Big Five. If you want the great migration or the vast plains of the Serengeti or Masai Mara, add Kenya or Tanzania.

Which visa do I need for Rwanda and Kenya?

The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda. Tanzania (Serengeti, Zanzibar) needs its own visa.
