Rwanda is small: the gorillas are 2.5 hours from Kigali, Akagera's savannah 2.5 hours the other way, Lake Kivu and Nyungwe Forest a few hours west and south. That makes it easy to build a Rwanda gorilla trekking trip around however many days you have. Here are the six itineraries we run most often.
1 day: gorilla trek from Kigali

Planning tips for any itinerary
- Lock in the gorilla permit first, then build the rest of the trip around that date.
- Never schedule the trek on arrival day; leave a buffer before international departures too.
- Avoid the longest drives at night — Rwanda's roads are good but winding.
- Mind Umuganda, the last Saturday morning of each month, when traffic pauses until about 11:00.
Itinerary questions
How many days do I need for gorilla trekking in Rwanda?
One day is enough for the trek itself if you start in Kigali. Two to three days lets you sleep near the park and add golden monkeys or Kigali. Five to ten days lets you combine gorillas with the Big Five in Akagera, chimpanzees in Nyungwe and Lake Kivu.
Can I fly into Kigali and trek the same day?
Not safely. Trekking briefings start at 7:00 AM at Kinigi, 2.5 hours from Kigali. Arrive at least the day before your trek.
What is the best Rwanda itinerary for first-time visitors?
Seven days covering Akagera, the gorillas and Lake Kivu is the most balanced first trip. Ten days adds Nyungwe's chimpanzees and Rwanda's cultural sites.
