Rwanda's biggest advantage for gorilla trekking is distance. From Kigali International Airport to the park headquarters at Kinigi is roughly 105 km and about 2.5 hours by road. Compare that with Uganda, where reaching Bwindi from Entebbe takes most of a day.
The route
From Kigali, the road climbs north-west out of the city, through the hills of Rulindo and Gakenke districts. It's a beautiful drive: steep tea and banana terraces, river valleys, roadside markets, and — as you approach Musanze — the first view of the volcanoes lined up along the horizon. From Musanze town, a smaller road runs about 12 km to Kinigi and the park HQ.
| Stage | Distance | Approx. time |
|---|---|---|
| Kigali → Musanze | ~93 km | 2 hours |
| Musanze → Kinigi (park HQ) | ~12 km | 20–25 minutes |
| Kinigi → trailhead | varies | 10–60 minutes |
Ways to get there
Private 4x4 with driver-guide (recommended)
How almost every gorilla trekker travels. Your driver-guide knows the road, handles registration at Kinigi, speaks to the rangers about family assignment and drives the rough track to the trailhead. All our gorilla tours include this.
Shared transport
Our budget trek uses a shared vehicle on a fixed schedule — the cheapest way to travel with a guide.
Public bus
Express buses run frequently from Nyabugogo bus station in Kigali to Musanze. It's cheap and reliable, but you still need a vehicle on trek day to reach Kinigi by 7:00 AM and drive to the trailhead.
Helicopter
Private charters fly from Kigali to the Volcanoes region in around 30 minutes — expensive, but spectacular. Available on request with luxury itineraries.

Timing trek-day pickup
The gorilla briefing starts at 7:00 AM. Latecomers risk losing their place in a group. On a day trip from Kigali we pick up at 4:30 AM, which allows for traffic, a short stop and some margin. From a lodge in Musanze, departure is usually around 6:15 AM; from Kinigi itself, 6:30 AM.
Worth stopping on the way
- Viewpoints over the Rulindo hills — terraced slopes that look painted.
- Roadside stalls along the way for fruit and roasted maize.
- Musanze town for coffee, a quick lunch or cash machines.
- The Twin Lakes, Burera and Ruhondo, a short detour east of Musanze.
Transport questions
How far is Volcanoes National Park from Kigali?
About 105 km by road to Kinigi, the park headquarters. The drive takes roughly 2.5 hours, sometimes a little more with traffic leaving Kigali.
Can I take public transport to Volcanoes National Park?
Buses run regularly from Kigali's Nyabugogo bus station to Musanze. But there's no public transport to the trailheads, and you need a vehicle to drive from Kinigi to the starting point of your trek, so independent travellers still need a private car or taxi for trek day.
Is the road from Kigali to Musanze safe?
Yes. It's a well-maintained paved road that is busy with buses and trucks. It winds through steep hills, so drivers familiar with it are an advantage, and it's better not to drive it yourself in the dark.
Can I fly to Volcanoes National Park?
There are no scheduled flights. Private helicopter transfers from Kigali can be arranged to landing sites near the park.
