Bwindi Gorilla Trekking from Kigali

Uganda's Bwindi Forest is closer to Kigali than to Kampala. Here is how the cross-border gorilla trek works — and when it beats trekking in Rwanda.

Many travellers fly into Kigali to trek gorillas in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It works because Bwindi's southern sectors are only a few hours from Kigali by road. Here's how it compares with gorilla trekking in Rwanda, and how to plan it.

The route

From Kigali toBorderApprox. drive
Bwindi — Rushaga sectorCyanika or Katuna/Gatuna4–5 hours
Bwindi — Nkuringo sectorCyanika4–5 hours
Mgahinga Gorilla National ParkCyanikaAbout 3.5–4 hours
Volcanoes NP (Rwanda) for comparisonNoneAbout 2.5 hours

Times include a typical border crossing; queues vary. Because treks start early in the morning, plan to sleep near the park the night before.

Permits and visas

  • Uganda gorilla permit: $800 per person (Rwanda: $1,500).
  • Visa: a Uganda visa, or the East Africa Tourist Visa covering Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya.
  • Vehicle: cross-border vehicle permits and insurance are arranged by your operator.
