Gorilla Trekking at Christmas and New Year

Peak season planning for December treks — book early.

Seeing mountain gorillas over Christmas or New Year is unforgettable — and very popular. Here's how to plan a festive gorilla trip without being disappointed.

Why it's peak season

The holiday period coincides with the start of the short dry season and long school and work breaks in Europe and North America. Demand for the 96 daily gorilla permits is at its highest from about 20 December to early January, and the best lodges near the park fill up too.

When to book

  • Gorilla permits: ideally 6 months ahead; by September at the latest for Christmas week.
  • Lodges near Kinigi: book at the same time — the top lodges sell out first.
  • Flights to Kigali: holiday fares rise fast; book early.

Already late? Ask anyway — cancellations do happen, and a day trip from Kigali avoids the need for a lodge near the park.

December weather

Rain eases through December, with more sunny mornings, but showers are still possible at altitude. Pack a rain jacket and gaiters regardless.

Ideas for a festive trip

  • Trek gorillas just before Christmas, then relax by Lake Kivu for the holidays — see our 7-day gorillas, Big Five & Lake Kivu.
  • See in the New Year in Kigali, then head north for a New Year's Day trek.
  • Make it a family trip — teenagers 15+ can trek; younger children can enjoy golden monkeys.
