An honest comparison

Rwanda vs Uganda Gorilla Trekking

Same gorillas, very different trips. Here's how to decide which country is right for you.

We specialise in Rwanda gorilla trekking, so you might expect a one-sided answer. You won't get one. Uganda is a fantastic gorilla destination and the right choice for some travellers. The question is which trade-offs suit you.

Why choose Rwanda

  • Time. Land in Kigali, trek tomorrow. A full gorilla trip fits in 1–3 days.
  • Easier logistics. Good roads, short transfers, very little that can go wrong.
  • Generally gentler terrain. The volcano slopes are more open than Bwindi's ravines; many treks are shorter.
  • High-end lodges. Some of Africa's finest lodges are a few minutes from the briefing point.
  • Combine with the rest of Rwanda easily. Lake Kivu, Nyungwe's chimpanzees and Akagera's big game are all within a day's drive on good roads.

Why choose Uganda

  • Price. The permit is $700 cheaper per person.
  • More families. More permit capacity, sometimes easier to get late bookings.
  • Longer trip, more variety. Combine gorillas with chimps in Kibale, tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth and the Nile at Murchison Falls.
  • Habituation. Uganda's four-hour habituation experience is well established.

What the total trip really costs

Permit price alone is misleading. For a short trip, Uganda's cheaper permit is offset by more time on the road: extra nights in lodges, more vehicle days and fuel, or domestic flights. On a two- or three-day gorilla-only trip, the total difference can be much smaller than the permit gap suggests. On a ten-day Uganda safari that includes gorillas, Uganda is usually cheaper.

Combining both

Many travellers fly into Kigali and do both: trek in Rwanda, then cross the border at Cyanika (near Musanze) to Mgahinga or Bwindi's southern sectors, which are closer to Kigali than to Entebbe. With the East Africa Tourist Visa, it's straightforward. Two treks in two countries means two very different forests and two different families.

Our honest verdict

Choose Rwanda if you're short on time, want the simplest logistics, prefer gentler terrain, or want top-end lodges. Choose Uganda if budget is the deciding factor, you're on a longer East Africa trip, or you want the habituation experience with more availability.

Rwanda vs Uganda questions

Is gorilla trekking better in Rwanda or Uganda?

Neither is better for the gorillas themselves — they are the same subspecies and the encounter rules are similar. Rwanda wins on access and convenience; Uganda wins on permit price and the number of families.

Why is the Rwanda gorilla permit more expensive?

Rwanda deliberately prices permits high ($1,500) to limit numbers and maximise conservation and community revenue. Uganda's standard permit is $800.

Can I trek gorillas in Uganda from Kigali?

Yes. Bwindi's southern sectors (Rushaga, Nkuringo) and Mgahinga are about 3.5–5 hours from Kigali via the Cyanika or Katuna/Gatuna borders — often quicker than from Entebbe.

Which country is easier for gorilla trekking?

Rwanda is generally easier: shorter transfers, more open terrain on the volcano slopes, and treks that are often shorter. Bwindi's forest is steep and dense.
