The honest conservation case

Is Gorilla Trekking Ethical?

Visiting wild gorillas does carry risks for them. Here is why, done properly, it is still one of the best things a traveller can do for the species.

It's a fair question. Habituating wild animals to people, and walking groups of tourists into their home every day, is not risk-free. But the evidence from the Virungas is clear: carefully managed gorilla trekking in Rwanda has been one of the main forces behind the mountain gorilla's recovery.

The case against

  • Disease. Gorillas share most of our DNA and can catch human respiratory infections, which can be fatal to them.
  • Stress. Habituation takes years and changes how gorillas react to people; daily visits are a disturbance, however brief.
  • Behavioural change. Habituated gorillas may become less wary of humans, which could make them more vulnerable outside the park.

How Rwanda limits the harm

  • Only one group of up to 8 people per family per day
  • A strict one-hour limit
  • A minimum distance of 7 metres
  • No trekking if you're ill; masks may be required
  • Minimum age of 15
  • Some families kept for research only, free of tourism
  • Daily monitoring by trackers and veterinary teams who can treat sick or injured gorillas

The case for

When Dian Fossey began her research in the 1960s, mountain gorillas were being killed by poachers and their habitat was being cleared. Tourism changed the economics: a living gorilla family, visited daily, became worth far more to Rwanda than any poacher's profit. The $1,500 permit funds ranger patrols, snare removal, daily monitoring and veterinary care. A share of park revenue goes to the surrounding communities, building schools, clinics and water supplies, and tourism employs porters, guides and lodge workers — giving local people a direct stake in the gorillas' survival.

The result: mountain gorilla numbers in the Virunga massif have more than doubled since the early 1980s, and in 2018 the IUCN moved the subspecies from Critically Endangered to Endangered. Read more about Dian Fossey and mountain gorilla conservation.

How to trek responsibly

  1. Don't trek if you're unwell — even a mild cold. Tell your guide.
  2. Respect the distance and the hour. Don't try to get closer for a photo.
  3. No flash, no food, quiet voices.
  4. Hire a porter — it puts tourism money directly into local households.
  5. Book with a licensed operator that follows the rules and pays fair wages.
  6. Buy crafts locally — at the Gorilla Guardians Village or cooperatives near the park.

Our view

Gorilla trekking is ethical when the rules are respected — by visitors, operators and authorities alike. Rwanda's model of few visitors paying high fees is one of the strongest examples in the world of tourism paying for conservation.

Ethics questions

Is gorilla trekking ethical?

When it follows strict rules — small groups, one hour, 7-metre distance, no sick visitors — gorilla trekking is widely considered one of the most ethical forms of wildlife tourism, because it pays for the protection that has helped mountain gorilla numbers grow.

Does gorilla trekking harm the gorillas?

The main risk is disease transmission from humans, which the rules are designed to minimise. Habituation itself involves some stress, which is why it is done slowly by researchers and why visits are limited to one hour per day per family.

How does gorilla tourism help local people?

Rwanda shares a portion of park revenue with communities around its national parks, funding schools, clinics and water projects, and tourism creates jobs for porters, guides, lodge staff and craftspeople.
