Mountain gorillas live on both sides of the Virunga volcanoes. On the Rwandan side they're protected in Volcanoes National Park; across the border in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in Virunga National Park — Africa's oldest park. Here's how gorilla trekking in Rwanda compares with Congo.
At a glance
| Rwanda (Volcanoes NP) | DR Congo (Virunga NP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Permit | $1,500 | Historically much cheaper |
| Security | Stable, safe | Volatile; tourism suspended at times |
| Access | 2.5 hrs from Kigali airport on good roads | Usually via Rwanda (Goma border) |
| Reliability | Treks run every day | Depends on the security situation |
| Infrastructure | Many lodges, from budget to luxury | Limited |
| Other primates | Golden monkeys; chimps in Nyungwe | Chimps; Grauer's gorillas in Kahuzi-Biéga |
The case for Congo
Virunga National Park is spectacular and historically the cheapest place to trek mountain gorillas, with smaller numbers of visitors. The Nyiragongo volcano hike, with its lava lake, is legendary. For experienced, flexible travellers, it has long been a remarkable alternative.
The safety reality
Eastern DRC has seen recurring conflict, and Virunga has suspended tourism at times. Many governments advise against travel to the region, which can also invalidate travel insurance. Plans can be cancelled at short notice. If you're considering Congo, check your government's current travel advice and the park's own announcements immediately before booking.
Why most travellers choose Rwanda
- Safe, stable and well organised
- Treks run every day of the year
- Short, easy transfer from an international airport
- Wide choice of lodges and easy add-ons — golden monkeys, Akagera, Nyungwe, Lake Kivu
- The same Virunga mountain gorillas
If budget is the main concern, compare Rwanda with Uganda instead — the safer cheaper alternative. See Rwanda vs Uganda gorilla trekking.

Rwanda vs Congo questions
Is gorilla trekking cheaper in Congo than Rwanda?
Historically yes — Virunga National Park's permit has been far cheaper than Rwanda's $1,500. But tourism in eastern DRC has been suspended at times for security reasons, so availability and safety must be checked before planning.
Is it safe to go gorilla trekking in the DR Congo?
Security in eastern DRC changes quickly, and many governments advise against travel to the region. Rwanda and Uganda are the reliable, safe options. Always check your government's current travel advice.
Are they the same gorillas in Rwanda and Congo?
Virunga National Park in DRC is part of the same Virunga massif as Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, home to mountain gorillas. DRC also has eastern lowland (Grauer's) gorillas in Kahuzi-Biéga National Park.
