Who can trek

Age Limits, Seniors & Families

The minimum age is 15. There is no maximum. Here's how to plan a gorilla trip for every generation.

Rwanda's gorilla trekking rules are simple when it comes to age: 15 and over, no upper limit. But a successful trip for teenagers, grandparents or travellers with limited mobility takes a little planning.

The 15+ rule

RDB will not issue a gorilla permit to anyone under 15 on the date of the trek. The reasons: the trek is physically demanding; young children are more likely to carry common infections that can spread to gorillas; and calm, predictable behaviour is essential around the family. Ages are checked against passports at Kinigi.

Teenagers (15–17)

Teenagers usually love it — and often find the hike easier than their parents do. Make sure they understand the rules (especially keeping distance and staying quiet), and pack snacks. A teenager's first gorilla encounter is one of the most rewarding things a family can share.

Families with younger children

Children under 15 can't trek gorillas, but Volcanoes is still a great family destination:

  • Golden monkey trekking, open from age 12 (RDB rule)
  • The Gorilla Guardians Village near Kinigi: drumming, dance and traditional crafts
  • A boat trip on the Twin Lakes
  • The Musanze caves
  • The visitor exhibition at the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund's Ellen DeGeneres Campus

Parents can trek on different days, or one parent treks while the other stays with the children. Many lodges can arrange trusted childcare.

Senior trekkers

There's no upper age limit, and older trekkers often have wonderful experiences. To make it easier:

  • Tell us ages and any health issues when booking — we request an easier family
  • Stay near the park the night before rather than doing a 4:30 AM day trip
  • Hire a porter (or two) — they'll support you on climbs and descents
  • Use the walking stick, or bring trekking poles
  • Walk slowly; the ranger will match your pace
  • Consult your doctor if you have heart, lung or joint conditions

Limited mobility

For travellers who can't walk the distance, porters can sometimes carry a trekker in a chair-style stretcher. This must be arranged in advance, costs extra, and depends on terrain and the family's location on the day. It's not guaranteed, so contact us as early as possible and we'll ask the park team on your behalf.

Age and family questions

What is the minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda?

Fifteen years old on the day of the trek. No exceptions are normally made, and ages are checked against passports.

Is there a maximum age for gorilla trekking?

No. Travellers in their seventies and eighties trek regularly, usually with a porter and a family that is expected to be closer to the trailhead.

What can children under 15 do while parents trek?

Golden monkey trekking (from age 12, the RDB minimum), visits to cultural villages, the Twin Lakes, Musanze caves, or time at the lodge with a trusted caregiver. We plan family itineraries regularly.

Can someone who can't walk far see the gorillas?

Sometimes. With advance notice, a carried-chair service with porters can occasionally be arranged, and rangers will try to assign a nearby family. It is never guaranteed — talk to us early.
